“And there was never a shortage of people around here who were willing to give blood. There really was no reason for them to leave here.”

Since Cape Breton firefighter Russ Davis has cheated death twice, he reckons he best give back to the community. His gift of choice is blood, but Davis said he’s frustrated that there is nowhere within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to donate. DAVID JALA/CAPE BRETON POST - David JalaSYDNEY — A Cape Breton firefighter who has experienced two close brushes with death is frustrated that he is unable to give the gift of life.

“That’s what I don’t get – blood is needed, I have a rare blood type that has a high demand, and I am more than willing to donate,” said Davis. The Canadian Blood Services centre on Bayers Road in Halifax is the only permanent clinic where Nova Scotians can donate blood. GOOGLE MAPS - David JalaCanadian Blood Services is a national organization responsible for Canada’s blood supply.

The 88-year-old, who worked in Glace Bay’s coal mines by day, saw more than his fair share of spilled blood as a corner man on the Canadian boxing scene. Plichie has donated blood more than 150 times. However, that was before 2010 when he was told that certain proteins in his blood interfered with the interpretation of hospital results.

“And there was never a shortage of people, especially miners, around here who were willing to give blood. There really was no reason for them to leave here.”The Cape Breton Post reached out to Canadian Blood Services, but no one was available for comment on Tuesday. However, in a previous conversation with this reporter earlier this year, an organization spokesperson said there were no plans to reopen the blood donor centre in Sydney.
