GLACE BAY, N.S. — The weather may be warm outside but the temperature is about to get even hotter on the ice at Miners Forum in Glace Bay. For the second ...

Cape Breton Eagles prospect Luke Patterson attempts to sneak the puck over the right pad of goaltender Xavier Farrah during Eagles training camp at Miners Forum in Glace Bay last August. Patterson, who won a Telus Cup national championship with the Moncton Flyers earlier this year, will be on the ice for the club’s rookie camp Tuesday in Glace Bay. Eagles general manager Sylvain Couturier said splitting the camp into two sections, beginning with the rookies, will give the players an opportunity to prove themselves early. As reported by the Cape Breton Post on draft day, all three players have committed to attending the Eagles camp this season and will be on the ice Tuesday.

“He will be quite a hockey player,” said Couturier, who talked to the family about his attendance on Aug. 5. Goaltender Giovacchino DiMattia, who played with Grand Falls of the Maritime Junior Hockey League last season, will attend camp on loan from the Moncton Wildcats. “You can’t leave your young players to discover the league or get to know the league on their own – they need guidance and they’re going to get that from these veteran players.”

Meanwhile, 18-year-old forward Kiefer Lyons, who played with the team last year, has been loaned to Moncton for their training camp. He had one goal in 38 games last season in Sydney. “He’s not going to come here first, he’s going to go to NHL camp first and from there Buffalo will decide,” he said.
