Hands-in learning: Kids learn to make puppets at Cape Breton library
Caelyn MacLeod and her mom Amanda MacLeod work on their puppets during a workshop at the James McConnell Memorial Library in Sydney on Monday. Chris Connors/Cape Breton PostSYDNEY, N.S. — Caelyn MacLeod didn’t just meet two new friends at the local library — she created them with her mom.
After 90 minutes, Caelyn used her imagination and a glue gun to turn sticks, fabric and googly eyes into a dog that walks on two legs while Amanda made a wizard.“I think I’m going to call him Buddy because he’s probably going to be my buddy,” Caelyn said of her dog. “His favourite food is probably tuna or eggs.”
About a dozen children took part in the afternoon workshop sponsored by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality recreation department’s ConnectArts program and hosted by Truro-based puppeteers Heather and Darryll Taylor of the Maritime Marionettes.“It’s awesome to them thinking outside the box. They could have made a puppet that just looks like a person but some of them thought, ‘Oh, let’s make a dog or an alien, or another kind of animal.’ It’s pretty cool,” she said.
