“There are multiple benefits, primarily for the patients. There are smaller incisions, significantly less blood loss, less pain and discomfort...It’s good for the surgeons as well. We can see better and work better and handle tissue better.” Parker mulled over surgery or radiation treatments and, following discussions with friends and neighbours who had the same condition, he chose the robot-assisted surgery. The choice was entirely up to him. Medical staff laid out both options and did not try to sway him.

Why is Parker sharing the tale of such a personal journey? He said he didn’t mind speaking out for a couple of reasons. The first is that maybe his story will raise awareness of fundraising efforts by the QEII Foundation to purchase another surgery robot. The system was entirely funded by donations from 2,300 donors who contributed $8.1 million. Six hundred patients have been treated using the robotic system.
