RCMP is investigating a fatal moose-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway east of South Brook on Friday, July 22. - File PhotoSOUTH BROOK, N.L. — A 24-year-old woman is dead after a car hit a moose on the Trans-Canada Highway east of South Brook early Friday morning.

Shortly before 1 a.m., Springdale RCMP responded to the collision where a car with five people inside had struck a moose on the highway. The vehicle lost control after the collision and left the road over a steep embankment, RCMP said in a release.The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre.The moose died on impact.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene, and the chief medical examiner's office is engaged in the ongoing investigation.
