Until then, it is unclear when or if passengers will be able to recover their vehicles and valuables, Cormier said. “We believe there’s still a fire in the engine room and in the funnels of the ship. So, late last night, around 9:30, there was a decision made that the ongoing firefighting efforts really were not productive,” Cormier said.
For those who arrived from outside Atlantic Canada, NFL is still working out transportation, Cormier said.“It’s peak summer season, very difficult and challenging to get accommodations. So obviously, if they are paying for them, they will be reimbursed for accommodations.” The environmental response team was present in case of any spills or environmental hazards, though there hadn't been any reported, Cormier said.
This team consists of four members who will enter the ferry once it has been deemed safe, said Chris Krepski, a spokesperson for the TSB.When passengers were first being evacuated from the ferry, SaltWire received multiple reports of lobster fishers taking their own boats out to help.
