A detail from the 1863 D.J. Lake topographical map of Prince Edward Island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. - Image courtesy UPEI Library After reading the Guardian and watching the news I thought maybe I would share my input into clarity of the French word"sauvage". On the old French and Acadian maps I see the word"sauvage" to describe the location on the map of that body of water.
In French, the word sauvage means"wild" to describe many things. For instance if I want to tell people there are wild strawberries or raspberries growing somewhere, then you would say"des fraises et framboises sauvage" in that location. If you discover a patch of land never touched by humans, you would say"une fôret sauvage ou terre sauvage". That word in French has a different meaning than what people think.
that Indigenous Peoples were here long before either the French or English settlers arrived. More important, both the French and English were part of the settler colonial project that rested on removing any Indigenous connection to territory. So it would be nice to know what name the Mi’kmaq assigned to this place thousands of years ago.Op-ed Disclaimer
