The Hants Community Hospital’s 24-hour emergency department can be accessed either through the front entrance or, at nighttime, through the rear of the building. Due to some temporary ER closures, residents are now being encouraged to call before showing up.WINDSOR, N.S. — West Hants’ mayor is urging residents to call ahead before seeking care at the Hants Community Hospital’s emergency room to ensure it’s open.

“These closures are alarming to all and will have grave effects for our residents who rely on the ability to access care within their communities when needed,” the letter reads.“Residents who live in rural communities tend to bear the brunt of emergency department closures primarily because of a lack of doctors, nurses or paramedics,” the letter continues.

Among the topics were the incentives paid for physicians willing to pick up shifts at the hospital, the idea of having an advanced care paramedic and experienced nurse cover the ER when a physician is not available, and the possibility of establishing a walk-in clinic. As for incorporating an advanced care paramedic and experienced nurse to staff the ER when a physician isn’t available, that’s not currently an option.
