Karen Lundy's new book, "Dear Billie: A World War II Love Story." - Contributed$22.00“On the morning of August 10, 1944, on a field not far from Falaise, France, a Sherman tank was hit by an 88mm shell fired by a German Tiger tank. Two Canadian Grenadier Guards of the 22nd Armoured Division were killed instantly. One escaped unscathed. Two others were wounded. One of the wounded was a young soldier from Bay Roberts, Newfoundland.
The six sections include “Canada – Prelude – Camp Borden,” “England – Hard training and letters from afar,” and “France – Engagement with the enemy.” The first letter is dated Jan. 27, 1943, from Vern to Billie Wenman, whom at that point is a friend of a friend; they hadn’t even met yet. He was 19; she was 17. They would meet only twice before he went overseas.
