'The longer that the process of accepting responsibility, both morally and financially, drags on, the longer that the process of healing and rebuilding trust will take,' writes Brian Hodder.
'We heard nothing': Cape Broyle community group blindsided by sale of local Catholic church and scrambling to save it
The anger comes from the fact that it was decisions by the upper echelons of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in covering up what happened years ago that has led to this situation. However, it is the everyday membership of the church — who had no role whatsoever in the abuse or coverup — who are being required to bear the financial burden as well as, in many cases, losing a building which often serves as a centre in the community.
While we can hope this time things will be different, the history of Mount Cashel would seem to indicate that our government, meaning the Canadian taxpayer, will be the first to step forward to admit fault and pay compensation, while the Roman Catholic Church will drag its heels, fight compensation through the court and extend the period of time this takes, thus delaying the much needed process of reconciliation.
