Recently, concerns have reached the boiling point in this province around a shortage of mental health professionals, psychologists in particular. This should be of grave concern to all of us. But precisely because of their specialist training, we can’t grow a fresh crop overnight. When it comes to something as messy and complicated as the human condition, there isn’t a silver bullet.
By stepping up mental health promotion and prevention, we can intervene early, in some cases potentially heading off more serious outcomes. That said, ensuring we have sufficient in-patient beds for those who are most vulnerable also is non-negotiable. When it comes to mental health care, more is not always better. This has long been understood in the sphere of physical medicine, where we don’t wait months or years to see an orthopedic surgeon for a foot injury if the services of a podiatrist suffice and can be accessed the following week.
