First Cornwallis Baptist Church anniversary committee secretary Bessie Crouse, chairperson Dianne Rafuse-Bennett and member Debbie Reimer, pictured in the church sanctuary, are hard at work planning a celebration for later this month. KIRK STARRATTUPPER CANARD, N.S. — Upholding its covenant of faith, hope, and love, the congregation at First Cornwallis Baptist Church has reached a significant milestone.
“I feel absolutely embraced by this community and if I needed anything, I think that I could call anybody in this church, and they would be there for me. I think that’s true for everybody,” Reimer said. Anniversary committee chairperson Dianne Rafuse-Bennett said that when it comes to the church reaching its 215th anniversary, she just figures that God still has work for them to do.

KIRK STARRATT Crouse said it was the church’s former minister, Rev. Dr. Peter Lohnes, who first talked her into attending services. She recalls that her granddaughter, Samantha, was part of the church’s youth group at the time.
The first church was relatively small but the second, built in 1873 under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Bradford Kempton, could hold about 800 people. In comparison, the current church, the congregation’s third, can seat approximately 250. Rafuse-Bennett said the current church is built on the foundation of the structure that burned. It cost approximately $10,000 to build and was dedicated on June 12, 1910.
In recognition of the 200th anniversary, a stained-glass window featuring iconic Kings County imagery including Cape Blomidon was installed in the church sanctuary. Steeple repairs will be the focus of 215th anniversary fundraising efforts.
