Missing out on most of their Grade 10 work, load shedding, Covid-19 and scarcity of textbooks are some of the challenges the matric top achievers said they faced.

“We did not have most of the textbooks for the whole year. As a result, some of us had to buy our own and we shared with other pupils,” Landingwe said.She said she had been dreaming about the minister’s breakfast since she was in Grade 8 which made her study even harder. “This was the moment I had been waiting for as I had put all my efforts towards my studies,” said Landingwe, who wants to study actuarial science at Wits University.Safiyyah Wadee , of Zinniaville Secondary School in Rustenburg in the North West, said she was excited to get a call telling her she was one of the top achievers in the country.should attend the provincial awards [ceremony]. She was crying and calling everyone in our family telling them about my achievement.

Wadee said she would study medicine at Wits University. Her career choice was inspired by her aunt Dr Farzahna Mohamed for the positive impact she made during Covid-19 pandemic.
