St Benedict's College top pupil made it against all odds
Despite struggling with health problems, top matric pupil Danny Gao from St Benedict's College still managed to achieve 11 distinctions and was just three percent shy of getting the 12On Wednesday, the Independent Examinations Board announced that the class of 2022 achieved a pass rate of 98.38%, which was slightly higher than last year’s matric results.
I was going through some complications, which I needed to balance with my schoolwork. It was discovered that I had a high level of iron in my blood, which led to my liver problems. As a result, I had to go for a few checkups. He said he did not let that disturb his schoolwork and, as a result, he achieved 95% for English, 90% for Afrikaans, 93% for information technology, 96% for life orientation, 90% for life science, 90% for science, 77% for music, 88% for further studies maths-stats, 81% for further studies maths calculations, 86% for further studies English and 99% for Mandarin.
Gao and his fellow pupil, Thashil Mistry, who achieved 10 distinctions, are both featured on the IEB Outstanding Achievers list, which is top 5% nationally in six subjects and a distinction in life orientation. They had both achieved results in the top 1% nationally within a subject.Gao applied to study medicine at Cape Town, Wits and Stellenbosch universities but had also applied to a few universities outside the country.
“We are proud of our pupils and there is much to celebrate. Many of our boys have attained results that exceeded their own expectations. The boys have produced a stellar set of results and we congratulate the class of 2022 on its excellent achievements. The matric final results are the culmination of 13 years of hard work, and they are a nod to both the boys’ unyielding efforts, their parents’ unequivocal support, and the determination of their teachers.
