Adding to the excitement was the overarching theme that would inspire Hoefner’s composing. “The natural world has always been a source of inspiration for Florian and environmental activism has been a uniting force in our relationship,” Carter says.Article content Hoefner, a native of Germany, moved with Carter from New York to St. John’s in 2014, after his wife, a Canadian, was hired as an associate professor of music at Memorial University. Calling himself a life-long environmentalist, he says living in Newfoundland, “so close to nature and different ecosystems,” has only strengthened his resolve.Article content

Not only was the Newfoundland-based McKay a two-time Governor General’s Award winner. Carter says McKay and his partner “became like family” to her and Hoefner when they moved to Newfoundland. The Iris Trio consists of violist Zoë Martin-Doike, clarinetist Christine Carter and pianist Anna Petrova.Carter says the combination of words and music has given her chills. “When I practice this music… I hear Don’s words in my head. The text and music are inextricably linked to me now, even though the poems are often read before the music begins,” she says.Article contentHoefner, a touring jazz musician, is also an assistant professor of music at Memorial.

“For composing I need longer stretches of uninterrupted time to get into the music,” Hoefner explains. “I can’t work with five or 10 minutes here and there. I often had to use evening and night times when the kids were sleeping to achieve any significant progress.” Composing the work took about two years, including many long interruptions.Article content
