Gregor Chisholm: For surehanded Hall of Famer Scott Rolen, the Blue Jays were a stepping stone

That’s tied with Jim Hunter for the ninth-lowest percentage among Hall of Famers. Rolen made the cut by just five votes.

The now 47-year-old Rolen was named to seven all-star teams, but his numbers were often overlooked because his career overlapped the steroid era, when statistics were inflated. The native of Indiana was at his best from 1997 to 2004, when he averaged 28 homers and 102 RBIs per season while slashing .287/.379/.524. He was National League rookie of the year in 1997, but only finished in the top five once in voting for most valuable player.

“Moving to Toronto, just a whole different game in the American League,” Rolen said. “That was fantastic for me and my family, the relationships and people that I’m still friends with there. Finishing up with the Reds, I got to come home, so to speak. My kids got to go to school, we commuted back and forth. The people and teammates along the way were fantastic human beings, fantastic people.”

Kent figures to get another look from the contemporary era committee. He ranks first in home runs at second base with 351, well ahead of Hall of Famers such as Ryne Sandberg , Joe Morgan and Rogers Hornsby . Only Hornsby had a higher slugging percentage, while Kent ranks third at his position with an .855 OPS.
