Rebecca Atkinson, the owner of Sober Island Brewing Company Ltd. in Sheet Harbour, said consumers are going to notice the price increases and react when they reach a certain point. As an example of the impact the mandatory price increases would have, a chart obtained by the SaltWire Network showed that a 473-ml can of beer with a starting price of $3.99 saw an increase of 25 cents in the fall and will see 20 more cents added to the final cost by April . Compared to six-pack and 12-pack options, that’s a steep change. A $15.99 six-pack of 355-ml cans rose by 25 cents in the fall and is projected to rise another 25 cents this spring, for a cumulative increase of 3.
Hartley said he works hard to crunch the numbers to ensure they’re covering the overhead while still keeping price increases palatable for consumers. He would like to continue doing that, without having to worry about mandatory increases. “There are avenues to discuss some of this stuff and allow for some feedback from the local supplier community without just making these decisions unilaterally,” said Green.
“Emera doesn’t get to raise prices without going before a board. … I don’t understand why there’s not more oversight when it comes to things like pricing for the NSLC,” he said, noting the importance of accountability to producers and consumers. In October, the NSLC released its second quarter financial results , which noted a 5.7 per cent increase in earnings for a total of $82.8 million.
“Our data shows the volume of sales of Nova Scotia single-serve 473-ml pack size did not go down as a result of last year’s price increase and it’s currently outpacing the growth of non-local 473-ml beer,” she wrote. However, she said some producers have indicated they would like to see a larger increase to help offset increasing costs.
Ware said the multi-pack beer increases were not as high because consumers typically gravitate to buying in bulk.
