The Public Protector has uncovered multiple instances of individuals being appointed to senior government positions without proper authorization. Reports highlight unsuitable candidates hired into key roles at the Department of Defence, Department of Transport, and Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality. The Public Protector has demanded action plans from these entities to rectify these appointments within 30 days.
JOHANNESBURG - The Public Protector has flagged a number of discrepancies where people are being hired to senior government posts without proper authorisation.At least three reports have highlighted government entities hiring unsuitable people to senior offices.
At the Department of Defence, an intern secretary was unlawfully hired to a senior position they were unqualified for.While at the Department of Transport, Moloko Machaka was appointed deputy director of rail safety regulation despite having neither the experience or qualifications for the job. The Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality could not explain to the Public Protector why it hired Joshua Matlou as its accountant.
At the time of his hiring, Matlou had a level six diploma as his highest qualification however the job required a minimum of a level seven degree. In all these cases, the Public Protector has given the respective government entities 30 days to provide an action plan of how they will correct these appointments.
