The South African government is seeking proposals for the repurposing of 24 vacant State-owned properties across the country. The initiative aims to utilize these properties for public good, attract investment, and create jobs. Minister Dean Macpherson emphasizes a shift from holding onto unproductive assets and encourages partnerships with the private sector.
The Department of Public Works is inviting proposals for the use of 24 State-owned properties across the country. The list includes some high-value property in the Cape Town Central Business District - portions of the Air 43 Flight School in Port Alfred and a Home Affairs building in Pretoria. Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson says it’s time to use vacant property for the public good - rather than have them attract crime and devalue the area.
From flats in Bloemfontein, former police barracks in Durban and Erven in Kimberley, Mmabatho and Mthatha - these are all among the properties listed with their market values for repurposing. Macpherson says he’s breaking away from the tradition of holding on to high-value properties that don’t serve any purpose. 'This means that where feasible, the State may partner with the private sector to ensure that properties contribute to economic growth and job creation. We believe these properties will attract significant investment and jobs through their redevelopment.' Earlier this year, Macpherson signed a memorandum of understanding with Ethekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba to identify property that can be used for the public good. Macpherson hopes to soon sign similar agreements with other municipalities in Gauteng and the Western Cape. 'We are hoping to use these properties as an example of what can be achieved with underutilised State-owned properties countrywide.'Proposals from the public and private entities on how to repurpose the listed properties have to reach the department by 13 March 2024
