Police have said there has been a significant increase in recent years of reports of domestic abuse incidents

The PSNI spends less than 0.5% of its budget on domestic abuse offences despite record reports of offences in the past two years.

The latest PSNI trend report regarding domestic abuse incidents and crimes showed that there has been an increase in both incidents and crimes reported to the police since 2004, with domestic abuse crimes doubling from 9,647 in 2004/05 to 21,723 to 2021/22. The force also said that the sanction outcome rate for this year is likely to increase based on current figures.

“With the recent introduction of new powers to tackle coercive control, we are seeing more victims than ever before coming forward and reporting to us. In 2010/11 we saw around 9,500 recorded crimes of a domestic abuse nature and now we are seeing an average of around 22,500 a year. This is a significant increase in reporting which is a positive reflection of public confidence but has had an impact on the overall outcome rates.

“We are constantly scrutinising our work in investigating crimes of a sexual or domestic nature so that we can continue to improve our response and work in partnership to bring offenders to justice and support victims with informed understanding and empathy.” She said: "Whilst the increase in crimes reported is concerning for the public, we have to remember it is due to an increase in policing operations to tackle domestic abuse crimes & confidence in policing. This is something I am particularly keen to follow through the policing board, and have raised questions around attrition rates, as there is a whole justice system approach to tackling domestic crimes.
