Communications minister Solly Malatsi has shared his high-level strategy for developing a new funding model for the SABC to replace its failing TV licence regime.

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies aims to first finalise the audio and audiovisual content services policy framework before developing a new timeline for fixing the SABC’s funding model.

The public service content primarily includes TV and radio news programming in all of the country’s official languages, some of which are not as commercially attractive to advertisers and have high production costs. Another problem critics like the South African National Editors Forum had was that the bill would give the minister additional powers in the appointment and removal of SABC board members.Solly Malatsi , current communications minister and Mondli Gungubele , former communications minister turned deputyDiko argued that the withdrawal was “highly ill-advised” and would be the “death knell” for the SABC.

“We believe that is key to unlocking the solution that will lead to a very clear and concise model that is grounded on a policy foundation,” Malatsi said.
