The Communications Minister has a plan to turn the number '112' into the new '911' for emergency services in South Africa.
Communications and Digital Tech Minister Solly Malatsi is moving forward with a government plan to establish the number 112 as the sole emergency number for South Africa.
This system will work similarly to how the “911” number works in the United States where you can reach police, firefighters or ambulance services through the same number depending on your emergency.from the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies , Malatsi has tasked the country’s communication authority ICASA to implement a transition from the many contact numbers for individual emergency services into a single consolidated emergency response with a single contact number.
According to Sections 76 – 79 of the Electronics Communications Act of 2005, the official, primary and original emergency contact number for South Africa is 112, but different emergency numbers have continued operating at the same time as this number. This is something the proposal makes note of. It calls for the revision of current methods to re-route emergency calls to the different emergency services using automated systems. According to the proposal, the country’s different emergency contacts have caused a number of problems to arise.
