A P.E.I. man has been sentenced to jail for assaulting his female roommate, including biting her, over allegations that he ate some of her food.
Dakota Dugay, 26, pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced on Jan. 19 in provincial court in Charlottetown. - Terrence McEachernCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —
Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald told the court that on Oct. 16 at around 4:46 p.m., Charlottetown police responded to a complaint about a fight between two roommates. At one point, Dugay struck her with his hand. In self-defence, she grabbed him by the throat. Dugay then struck her with a broken umbrella, but she continued to hold on to his throat. Dugay then bit her on the arm. This time, she let go of his throat.
Defence lawyer Conor Mullin noted that his client didn't have a prior criminal record and pleaded guilty to the charge, which spared the woman from testifying at a trial. Mullin also said that despite the concerning comments to police, he also provided them with details of the assault.
