“It would be nice to see – instead of being a complaints-based system – the city actually has people looking through listings and checking up on properties to make sure they are licensed if they are being used in this way.”
, said the advocacy group would like to see the city take a more proactive approach to enforcement.
“We think the city really has a responsibility to let property owners within city limits know about this and that it will take effect at the end of March. This is a really big change in the city’s regulations,” he said.
During a Jan. 11 council meeting, Coun. Jeff MacDonald said the conversation around short-term rentals is one the town is starting to consider. MacDonald said the town has hired software company Granicus to scrape and collect data on short-term rental operations within Stratford. He said with the information they collect, the town will be able to have an informed discussion on whether it wants to pursue regulations, and how they would look if they did.
McKeigan said the company will deliver information on short-term rentals each month, with the first bit of information identifying 59 listings across Airbnb, VRBO and other online marketplaces.
