On The Road with Mike Drew: Head in the clouds yyc

From where I was parked a little bit north of High River, I could see them streaming along the mountains above the Highwood River off to the west, a line of ragged shapes that snagged on the peaks and shredded across them. The sun had just risen and the morning light, finding a break in the overhead clouds, caught them as they tumbled along.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

There was a bit of open water further down and I found a singe goldeneye drake swimming and diving there. Handsome bird: I wish there had been more of them. The snow drifts on the ice around open water mimicked the clouds overhead. Tracks made when the ice surface was slushy showed where animals had passed. An eagle riding the updrafts along the valley slid by nearly sideways overhead but I didn’t see it soon enough to grab a picture.

I’ve passed this road many, many times before but I had only taken it one previous time and that was a very long time ago. So I hung a right and headed for the high country up that way instead. Limber pines and bare grass along Lyndon Creek in the Porcupine Hills west of Claresholm, Ab., on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.And it had been ranch country for a long time. I came across a signpost that commemorated the Lyndon post office, first established far up the valley in 1893. What an adventure it must have been to be a postie back then, delivering the mail on horseback. The nearest town would have been Claresholm, close to 50 km away, a full day’s ride in both directions.

It was downright pleasant down here along the creek. The wind had backed off and as the day wore on, the sun had moved around to where it was past the edge of the chinook arch and bright light was popping through.I could hear water gurgling along under the ice of the creek and a flock of sharptail grouse took off in a clatter of wings, nearly giving me a heart attack as they did.

Back at Pine Coulee I found a pair of bald eagles out on the ice. They were picking at something they had either just killed or found frozen into the surface. I imagine these are local eagles that are spending the winter here — many eagles do — but in just a few weeks we’ll start seeing more and more of them along the eastern slopes of the Porcupines.Article content
