Opinion Martin Regg Cohn: 10 reasons why Mike Schreiner should think before swapping Green for Grits

For 14 years Mike Schreiner has made his mark as the nice guy in a green tie leading Ontario’s Green Party. Not so fast, Schreiner says. Not interested, he insists.

Here are ten reasons Schreiner might want to look hard before he leaps to another horse, to avoid a hard landing:admire Schreiner’s focus Unlike Rae, Schreiner is still on the job as Green leader today — denouncing rival parties while renouncing any ambitions to lead them. If he eats his words tomorrow — claiming he never meant what he said about Liberals being sleazy, and that he didn’t mean to say he wasn’t interested in leading them these last few weeks — he’ll have a lot of explaining to do after 14 years of urging people to vote Green. For a politician who relies on “clarity” and credibility, it might defy credulity.

Schreiner is popular today, but he is not as well known outside the Queen’s Park bubble as some assume. Compared to his, his smiling style has worked well. But polling shows only about half of Ontarians know much about him, with little evidence that Schreiner-mania has swept the province during his 14 years at the helm.

Are Liberals ready to dissolve Ontario’s separate school boards? That was Green Party policy when Schreiner took over as leader, and he has never disowned it — just tried to avoid talking about it. It’s a divisive issue, which is why the major parties have tiptoed carefully around publicly-funded Catholic education until now. Schreiner would have to clear the air.
