The health expert has been discussing the benefits that learning an instrument can have on your mind in a new episode of his BBC Sounds podcast, Just One Thing.
Michael Mosley has revealed that spending your spare time learning the piano or ukulele can actually boost your memory and brain power.
Dr Seinfeld explained that learning the piano or ukulele can enhance your cognitive abilities by activating regions of the brain associated with motor co-ordination and the processing of emotions. "But, musical training produced significantly higher improvements in executive functions, divided attention and inhibitory control. These are skills that we normally require in our everyday life, for example, to plan our day or when we are cooking and we have to follow a recipe."
Michael also discussed other research in this podcast that showed that learning an instrument can actually improve your mental health too. Michael also noted that many mental health issues are thought to be "linked levels of chronic inflammation in the body". So the study mentioned above also measured markers of inflammation, like Interleukin-4.
