The Red Devils have been linked with a number of defenders in this transfer window, including Jurrien Timber, Pau Torres and Lisandro Martinez.With the former said to have rejected a move to Old Trafford, the Premier League side set their sights on Timber's teammate, Martinez.
Arsenal were believed to be leading the race for the Argentina star's signature earlier in the window, but United's interest later put them in pole position, with the player understood to prefer to work with his former Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag. However, the Dutch side appeared reluctant to part ways with the versatile footballer, and rejected a previous bid of €47 million for his services, but Martinez's desire to leave has seen them soften their stance.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, a full agreement has now been reached between the two clubs on a package of up to €55 million for Martinez's services, with the 24-year-old set to sign a five-year deal with United.Romano adds that Ten Hag played a big role in the South American's decision to make the switch.
The Manchester club are also understood to be working on other targets, with some reports suggesting they are closing in on a move for Frenkie de Jong, while an announcement confirming the signing of playmaker Christian Eriksen is expected in the near future.
