While the looting happened unabated at the Sizwe Shopping Mall, three minutes from a police station, Bheki Cele & Ayanda Dlodlo told the media that the situation was under control
The five cops, carrying rifles, came out of the cars and watched as the crowd looted. Two of the cops went inside the Boxer supermarket where people were freely helping themselves to groceries, but came out as quickly as they had walked in.
One cop drew his 9mm and started shooting at the crowd. The crowd dispersed, only to return shortly and continue to throw rocks at the police. At this point, the crowd broke into other shops and started helping themselves to everything they could lay their hands on. People walked away with geysers, generators, car tyres, beds, TV stands, airtime, paint and grocery items. Building materials from the Builders supermarket were loaded on to big trucks and vans.
People also broke into the storeroom of the Boxer supermarket. Here they began looting in bulk. People stood with boxes of fish oil, washing powder, noodles, crates of cold drink, sugar, bags of meat and all other food items and cosmetics.
