Small children, pensioners and young people were among those who ransacked a shopping complex in Protea Glen in Soweto on Monday
Gauteng now burns for Zuma too
The crowd retaliated by pelting the police with stones and about 10 minutes later they left. Then the crowd went back into the shopping complex and targeted the building materials store. They broke down the door and it was free for all. City Press witnessed one pensioner who walked out carrying four rakes. Geysers, paint, aluminium doors, blinds and anything they could lay their hands on were looted.
City Press also witnessed a young girl running into the shop and left designer house lights which she handed to her mother. Then her mother told her to go back for more. Some parts of the Soweto suburb were quiet. Other popular shopping centres and spaza shops in the township were closed.
