“How we educate our children is an ongoing issue. Is it time to rethink how we are educating children?” asks letter-writer Everett Hobbs of Conception Bay South.

In the case of girls, it was limited to the upper class. At age 14, you were finished school and you went to university, if you had the money, or to learn a craft.

The seven stages outlined by Shakespeare may be taken as an early form of stage development theory. In our time, various theories of human have been put forward, covering various aspects of personhood. Included among them are: Psychsocial ; Cognitive ; Attachment ; Spiritual ; Moral ; Psychosocial . How these influence contemporary education, I have no idea, but I expect some of these theories have become normalized in our thinking and behaviour.

In his 1992 book,"The Disappearance of Childhood," Neil Postman claimed that childhood is a social artifact. It came about with the invention of the printing press and the growth of literacy, which marked the separation between adults and children. This remained the case until the introduction of television and related technology. He claimed that this tended to eliminate the divide between childhood and adulthood.
