Italian Serie A club Lazio has terminated its relationship with Juan Bernabe, the falconer who has handled their eagle mascot, Olimpia, since the 2010/11 season. The decision comes after Bernabe posted explicit images of his erect penis online following penile implant surgery. Lazio condemned Bernabe's actions as highly inappropriate and stated that his behavior made any further association impossible.
Lazio has terminated its relationship with falconer Juan Bernabe, who has been handling their eagle mascot , Olimpia, since the 2010/11 season. The decision follows a series of online posts by Bernabe featuring explicit images of his erect penis, which he shared after undergoing penile implant surgery. Lazio expressed shock and stated that the seriousness of Bernabe's conduct made any continuation of their relationship impossible.
The club acknowledged that this dismissal would deprive fans of Olimpia's presence at Lazio's upcoming home matches, including their Europa League fixture against Real Sociedad on January 23. Bernabe defended his actions, claiming in a radio interview that nudity is normal and that he grew up in an open-minded, naturist family. However, this isn't the first time Bernabe has courted controversy. In 2021, he was suspended by Lazio for performing a fascist salute and chanting pro-Mussolini slogans at the end of a match against Inter Milan. He was filmed by fans at Rome's Stadio Olimpico making the gesture and chanting 'Duce, Duce' while holding Olimpia and wearing full Lazio kit. Bernabe later expressed pride in supporting the far-right Spanish political party Vox and stated his admiration for Mussolini, comparing him favorably to Franco, the dictator of Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Lazio's connection to the extreme right extends back to at least the 1970s, with far-right fan groups being a common presence throughout Italian football
