The Judicial Conduct Tribunal investigating allegations of sexual harassment against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge is puzzled by text messages sent by the complainant, Andiswa Mengo. One message in particular, which encourages the judge to 'remain curious' and expresses a desire for him to have 'interest' upon arrival, has raised concerns about Mengo's intentions.
JOHANNESBURG - Submissions made by the woman who has accused a senior judge of sexual harassment , Andiswa Mengo , have generated confusion from the Judicial Conduct Tribunal tasked with investigating the matter. The tribunal is investigating the allegations of sexual harassment against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge . As the details of the exchanges were laid bare before the tribunal, one text from Mengo struck the tribunal as questionable.
During an interaction on the social media platform WhatsApp in 2021, Mengo said to the senior judge: 'Remain curious. I like that, so that when you arrive, you will have interest.' Mengo denied that she was trying to garner the top judge’s interest. However, the tribunal questioned the nature of her message, expressing concern that it could be interpreted as an attempt to elicit a particular response from the judge. The tribunal is examining the context of the exchange and Mengo's intentions to determine if her message constitutes inappropriate behavior or harassment.
