A tribunal investigating allegations of sexual assault against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge has focused on seemingly flattering messages sent by the complainant, Andiswa Mengo, to the judge president. Evidence leader advocate Salome Scheepers questioned Mengo about her response to a photo of the judge president, where she called him 'cute'. Mengo, the High Court secretary, has alleged unwanted sexual advances by the judge president.
JOHANNESBURG - The tribunal investigating allegations of sexual assault against Eastern Cape Judge President Selby Mbenenge has probed the complainant on the flattering remarks she offered to the respondent.
"But in between those two messages of the respondent, there's a message from yourself where you reply to a photo of the JP. Why did you respond in this way?"

Sexual Harassment Probe Against Eastern Cape Judge President Mbenenge Continues PubliclyProbing allegations of sexual harassment against Judge President Selby Mbenenge of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court continues on Tuesday with the evidence of the complainant Andiswa Mengo. The complainant contends that the alleged sexual harassment took place between June 2021 and November 2022 via in-person and electronic communication, which according to her, were unwanted. Judge President Selby Mbenenge initially opposed a public hearing into the first-ever probe of this nature in the Judiciary. This resulted in a December 2024 ruling that ordered a hybrid hearing. However, a turn of events on Monday (13 January 2025) saw a changed position from the top Judge, resulting in the Tribunal delivering another order which now makes the hearings public in its entirety.
