Johannesburg Water is increasing water restrictions in response to unreliable supply, particularly affecting areas like Lenasia and Orange Farm. The utility is implementing measures to manage demand and ensure stability across its systems.

Johannesburg Water is escalating restrictions across the city as residents in Lenasia and Orange Farm grapple with unreliable water supply . The utility announced a progressive increase in daily sites restricted to enhance capacity as demand surges, following the reinstatement of daily water restrictions on December 27th. The situation is particularly dire in Lenasia , where multiple reservoirs are under close scrutiny.

The Lenasia Hospital Hill and High-Level reservoirs have plummeted to critically low levels, necessitating numerous daily interventions. These interventions include closing water outlets overnight to bolster capacity for the subsequent day's supply and curtailing water during the day when required. 'Residents in the affected supply zone may encounter low water pressure or intermittent supply, with some potentially facing a complete absence of water,' Johannesburg Water explained. The utility is implementing measures to close outlets at night and reopen them in the morning at both Orange Farm and Lawley reservoirs. Conversely, the broader Johannesburg Water systems are demonstrating stability. The Commando System, encompassing the Crosby and Brixton reservoirs, reports consistent operations with both pumps functioning at Crosby and stable tower levels at Brixton. However, the Hursthill 1 reservoir is currently empty and operating in bypass mode, though it is still supplying surrounding areas. Meanwhile, the Randburg Roodepoort systems are exhibiting robust performance, with Linden 1 and 2 reservoirs, Waterval tower, and Quellerina all maintaining normal capacity levels and supply. Blairgowrie, Helderkruin, Kensington B, and Witpoortjie reservoirs are also reporting stable conditions with adequate supply. The Sandton system maintains stable water supply levels following a planned closure of the Sandton meter from 7 pm on Thursday until 6 am on Friday, as part of ongoing water demand management efforts
