Johannesburg Water announced that officials from the National Treasury and Department of Water and Sanitation are collaborating to resolve the city's water issues. The utility aims to increase infrastructure maintenance, including pipe replacement, with the expected financial support. Leaking pipes, high water consumption, bursts, and inadequate maintenance have been cited as contributing factors to the city's water problems. Johannesburg Water requires significantly more funding to address the 20 billion backlog and maintain its infrastructure effectively.
JOHANNESBURG - Utility, Johannesburg Water, said that the National Treasury and Department of Water and Sanitation officials had joined hands to tackle the city's water woes.
Spokesperson, Nondumiso Mabuza, said that with the current budget the entity has been allocated, planned infrastructure maintenance had been steady."With the projection that we're expecting from the city and its treasury, we're hoping to scale up maintenance across the city that includes our pipe replacement programme."
The entity has attributed its challenges to leaks, overconsumption, bursts and slow structural maintenance. Mabuza adds that with more financial resources and adequate revenue collection, Johannesburg Water should be able to maintain infrastructure. "National has pushed treasury to ensure that we do secure funds. We are sitting at a 20 billion backlog currently and for us to be able to sustain our infrastructure on an annual basis we need at least a minimum of three or so billion . We currently have a billion on an annual basis."
