The acclaimed musical 'Isandlwana Lecture – The Musical' returns to the Joburg Theatre for its sixth edition, commemorating the Battle of Isandlwana and its profound impact on the Zulu nation. Through music, storytelling, and the powerful voices of Amahubo, the musical explores themes of resilience, cultural preservation, and the importance of remembering the past.
The musical, 'Isandlwana Lecture – The Musical,' returns to the Joburg Theatre for its sixth edition this week, running from Wednesday, January 22nd to Sunday, January 26th at The Lesedi. The production recounts the story of the Battle of Isandlwana, a significant event in the Anglo- Zulu War of 1879, where the Zulu nation achieved a stunning victory against the British forces.
The musical captures the bravery of the 20,000 Zulu warriors, armed only with spears and marching barefoot, who defeated the well-equipped British army led by Sir Henry Chelmsford. Through music and storytelling, the production reflects on the battle's impact on the Zulu people, both spiritually and culturally.Mbuso Khoza, the musical's creator, describes it as more than a history lesson, emphasizing its role as a tribute to the resilience of the Zulu nation and a reminder of the importance of remembering and sharing the past. Khoza highlights the critical role of cultural preservation, stating that culture is the foundation of a community's identity and the driving force behind shared values and collective action. He believes that recording and documenting these cultural nuances is crucial for shaping society and ensuring its continuity. Khoza further emphasizes the role of the arts in preserving history, strengthening human connections, and reflecting the emotions and sentiments of a community. He notes that music, in particular, has always been a powerful tool for healing and emotional expression. At the heart of the production are Amahubo, the sacred Zulu hymns that embody the spirit, pain, and hope of the era. Joined by a 16-member acappella group, Ijadu le Afrika Choir, Khoza brings to life the voices of iconic Zulu warriors like Ntshingwayo ka Mahole and Mehlokazulu ka Sihayo, alongside British figures such as Anthony Durnford and Charlie Harford. Khoza emphasizes the need to move beyond dwelling on past conflicts and focuses on healing through music and self-love. He believes that by nurturing ourselves, we create a better future for generations to come. 'Isandlwana Lecture – The Musical' has enjoyed successful runs in previous years, and Khoza anticipates this year's edition to be equally remarkable, promising a captivating journey through memory with the powerful voices of Amahubo. James Ngcobo, the Artistic Director of Joburg City Theatres, views the partnership with Mbuso Khoza as one of their most significant annual collaborations, recognizing the production's profound exploration of history, brought to life through mesmerizing rhythms and dance. Ngcobo invites audiences to celebrate their heritage and engage with stories that are both educational and serve as a powerful reminder of their roots as a vibrant center of storytelling in the City of Gold.Tickets for 'Isandlwana Lecture – The Musical' are readily available for purchase through Webtickets and the Joburg Theatre website at a standard price of R400.00. Showtimes are set for 19:30 from Wednesday to Saturday (January 22nd – 25th) and at 15:00 on Sunday, January 26th
