Architect Lee-Loy Kwee Wah at Tampines Central Park's watermelon-themed playground, which she designed but had not seen for years afterwards.

It was even more of a focal point in its early years. Back then, Tampines was a rustic place with an abundance of Tempinis trees and fruit orchards. Mrs Lee-Loy retired from HDB in 2023 when she was a deputy director of design and development, and she has not seen the playground for many years. “Of course, it was also fashionable at that time in the early 1980s, and we could obtain multiple colours,” she adds.

While HDB designed and built the playground, the Tampines Town Council has maintained it in the years since, Mrs Lee-Loy clarifies. It has made modifications such as the addition of a railing on the top portion of the bigger, half-slice watermelon. Her team looked specifically to tropical fruit for inspiration, as these are simple, fun objects that local children would recognise.

“You have to place yourself in the mindset of a child when you are designing a playground,” says Mrs Lee-Loy. “And envision how you would want to play within the space. The overall effect, she hoped, would be colourful and attractive enough to draw kids out of their high-rise homes and engage with other kids in the neighbourhood.
