Betty Begg-Brooks and the many volunteers at Gifts from the Heart are looking to open three new community fridges across the greater Charlottetown area, with one each in Stratford, West Royalty and near the Charlottetown airport.

Begg-Brooks met recently with Stratford Mayor Steve Ogden and that particular project “is a go,” she said in a SaltWire interview on July 14.Where some community fridge and pantry projects are unstaffed and open 24 hours, these fridges will have volunteers and run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Begg-Brooks is also working with a construction company that builds tiny homes to make the actual fridge structures and was about to meet with them when SaltWire spoke with her. She is concerned – so much that she actually turned down the location during a previous offer. Still, she estimated 65 to 75 per cent of clients own cars, and the issue will be getting transportation for the rest, she said.

Sandra Sunil, second from left, co-founder of the P.E.I. Community Fridge, says co-ordinating volunteers is one of the biggest tasks for any new community fridge project. Also in the photograph, from left, are MLA Ole Hammarlund, Samel Sunil and Opposition Leader Peter Bevan-Baker. - Logan MacLeanSunil also had some advice for those trying to start a fridge.
