Days after being removed as the Liberal candidate for Charlottetown-Winsloe, Jessica Simmonds has announced she is running as an independent for Charlottetown-West Royalty, her home district, in the upcoming provincial election. - Cody McEachern/SaltWire NetworkCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Only a week after being removed as a Liberal candidate in the upcoming provincial election, Jessica Simmonds is now running as an independent in Charlottetown-West Royalty.

In a March 6 interview with SaltWire Network, Liberal Leader Sharon Cameron confirmed the party received a complaint about Simmonds and her claim of Indigenous heritage. Simmonds said the party asked her to prove her Indigenous heritage. But when she provided the party with her Native Council of P.E.I. membership cards and online family tree results showing her great-great-grandmother was Indigenous, the party said it wasn’t enough.“I was like, I’m not stepping down for my personal reasons, these are your reasons,” she said.

While she was happy to be working with the other candidates in the Liberal party, she said running as an independent is a better fit for her.
