David Ducharme will build his sculpture inside the seaport event centre
British Columbia artist David Ducharme is building a giant sand sculpture at the Charlottetown Seaport Event Centre that will measure 10 to 14 feet high by 20 feet long. - Dave Stewart/SaltWire NetworkCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A British Columbia artist is working with about 20 tonnes of P.E.I. sand to create something cruise ship passengers will admire this season in Charlottetown.
“I happened to be here for the Canada Games, so it turned to be an opportunity for me to do a sand sculpture on the Island and do something new for the port," Ducharme told SaltWire Network March 10 as he took a break from his work.When he’s finished, the sculpture will stand anywhere from 10 to 14 feet high and 20 feet long. It’ll take him up to 90 hours from start to finish.
“It’s my way to move through the world. It started out as a hobby and entertainment. I like making things. I had neighbours that were into snow sculpting," Ducharme said, adding that the opportunities were limited in snow sculpting. “It’s all about merging human and nature into a connected world … it will be a garden of oysters intertwined with the culture of the Island."
