Const. Tamara Christmas receives her Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal from CBRM councillor Eldon MacDonald Thursday night at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion's Royal Cape Breton Room. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — The aftermath of post-tropical storm Fiona required some shifting around of Cape Breton Regional Municipality staff to assist with emergency management in a time of great need.

Given the magnitude of the damage the late September storm caused throughout the CBRM, Lever said it took a whole crew of staff members to ensure the municipality could still provide essential services to residents while under a state of local emergency. The Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion's Royal Cape Breton Room hosted ceremonies Thursday night to honour CBRM and Cape Breton Regional Police recipients of a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTOthers are names who work behind the scenes but ensured that CBRM functioned as Nova Scotia Power, the military, the Mennonite Disaster Service and more served the region in post-storm cleanup efforts.

CBRM street operator Darryl McNeil:"A lot of it was dealing with the unknown." IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTCBRM’s District 5 Coun. Eldon MacDonald, who also chairs the police board commission, later took the stage to hand out medals to the 12 regional police honorees — including police Chief Robert Walsh and inspectors Bill Turner and Paul Muise led the list.
