The farm crew at Agriculture and AgriFood Canada’s Harrington research farm is donating fresh potatoes to the Upper Room Food Bank this winter in a new initiative to bring a surplus harvest to the community.
John Cummiskey, a field operator at Agriculture and AgriFood Canada's Harrington research farm, holds up a bag of potatoes he and his team harvested in the fall. The spuds are grown like regular table potatoes and the farm saved 10,000 pounds to donate to food banks, when and if needed.
Many Agriculture and Agrifood Canada research facilities across the country grow conventional crops to echo current practices. “Anything that’s research-grade, we cannot use,” said Kirby. “ So everything that we give would be something that … you would pick up at the grocery store in the same Prince Edward Island bag of potatoes that you would get.”
The farm crew, at the Agriculture and AgriFood Canada research farm in Harrington, including John Cummiskey, saved over 10,000 pounds of fresh P.E.I. potatoes to give to P.E.I. food banks over the winter, if needed. - Alison Jenkins/SaltWire NetworkP.E.I.’s Upper Room Food Bank has seen a 20 per cent increase in users this year, said executive director Mike MacDonald when SaltWire visited him on March 13. There were 950 families accessing help in one month this year.
He said the food bank also gets donations of fresh carrots, turnips tomatoes and apples sometimes and his clients appreciate any fresh food they receive.
