Editorial | Your vote’s precious. Use it
From a lack of piped water that forces people in rural areas to share water with animals, and persistent power outages that harm people and businesses, to sewage that runs into homes and along streets, and rubbish that piles up uncollected, it’s clear that local governments are struggling.
Most residents are unhappy about the state of affairs and some have responded by vowing not to vote in tomorrow’s elections. But nothing is more self-defeating than an attitude that will encourage those who are misgoverning to continue doing so. Even for those who hate political parties, local elections allow us to choose between fellow residents whose personal qualities and abilities we may know. Way beyond the few most prominent political parties, so many other independent candidates and new political parties have availed themselves as options. So let us go out and vote, and save our towns and cities from further ruin.
