This calls for compromises by both parties for the sake of progress and balanced implementation of an energy strategy that scrutinises the pros and cons of both fossil and renewable energy.

What is happening now is that all the parties, from environmentalists to fossil fuel proponents, stand from polarised and fixed positions, despite mounting evidence that neither green nor fossil-based energy can achieve a good supply of electricity to sustain the economy while at the same time doing nothing to exacerbate global warming or climate change.

Fossils such as coal do well to meet the demands of supply in a developing country such as South Africa, but decarbonisation targets cannot be met. While green energy can, to a certain extent, provide clean energy, there are doubts an entire country can rely on it alone and still achieve economic growth.

Maybe the consideration should be on which of the fossil fuels must be discontinued completely because they produce excessive carbon compared with the others. The most reliable sources of renewable energy must be identified. Any risk or change that the use of certain renewable energy sources may introduce should also be scrutinised. For example, are there any negative effects on wildlife by wind turbines? How about land space? In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
