Today marks 24 years since the 1999 Comrades Marathon 'twins runners' cheating scandal. The Motsoenengs traded places during the 89km race for one of them to nail a spot in the top 10. DanielMothowagae caught up with one of the twins, Sergio.

Motsoeneng twins Sergio and Fika snapped during the 1999 Comrades Marathon where their cheating plan backfired.Not many may recall who won the Comrades Marathon in 1999. Instead, the down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in KwaZulu-Natal was about the Motsoeneng twins - Sergio and Fika - who did the unthinkable.

The image was published along with the article that exposed the cheating by the twins spotted a number of inconsistencies of a runner in bib number 13018.Bester told City Press: “When my team-mate Neil Schalkwyk put an appeal against the two, they [race’s appeal jury] threw it out and said it was not successful. They insisted that they [Motsoenengs] had crossed over the two mats [timing chip points] on the route.

Now 45, Sergio is a teacher and the head of sports at Ed-U-College, a private combined school in his hometown of Phuthaditjhaba in QwaQwa in the Free State.Sergio said his twin was also coaching and running his own businesses on the side, but he did not elaborate.
