My withdrawal from clinical service was met with magnanimous gratitude for my efforts over the previous four years. The medical director met my news with smiling appreciation and best wishes, the Department Head of Psychiatry organizing for me a farewell luncheon in the mental health clinic where I worked. Clinical staff, administration and my family attended, and I received with a parting ovation, a beautiful canvas painting from a renowned Cape Breton artist.

Dr. Libbus served many years as CBDHA Psychiatry Department Head, on many education and recruitment committees, and as lead organizer for a Psychiatry Clinical Café, a weekly meeting that addressed the clinical and personal needs of local psychiatrists, a manner of fortifying the wellness of physicians in an atmosphere of positive regard and support – and a manner of assisting with psychiatry retention in Cape Breton.

Leaving my work that day, I visited Dr. Milligan on Unit 1D and was happy to see that the staff there had provided him with a cake, and staff and patients were enjoying pizza. I sat with him for a while with few words exchanged, there being nothing really left to say. His departure on that day being like his fellow psychiatrist one floor above - without officialdom - but still with gratitude for service performed, and more importantly, recognized by those who worked closest with him.
