Roland Thornhill, left, hands the land deed for 60 acres near Wagmatcook to Chief Norman Bernard on Tuesday. The land transfer is an act of reconciliation which gives the 60 acres back to the rightful owners. - Nicole SullivanThe Mi'kmaq spelling of Kmitkinu should have a line across the middle of the first 'i' in the word but the Cape Breton Post was unable to write it as such.
The Mary Harper Nature Reserve, which was one of the Bras d'Or Preservation Nature Trust properties, was transferred to Wagmatcook First Nation and Sespite'tmnej Kmitkinu Conservancy at a Mawiomi in the community. Like much of the land in Unama'ki , the 60 acres, which includes MacNaughton's Cove in St. Patricks Channel was taken by colonizers and sold. The last owners to have the property were Mary Harper and her husband, who died before her.Author Jacinda MacKinnon knew Harper and wrote a book about a sailing adventure they had together.
Like Bernard, Isadore had wanted to see land returned to the Mi'kmaq people in Cape Breton but didn't think it would happen. She also agrees with Bernard that giving the land back is an important part of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. About six years ago, Johnson first met with Muggah about the land when the Bras d'Or Nature Preservation Trust started finding new owners to carry on their environmental protection of some areas.
"It's a form of reconciliation with the land. So much has been done with humans we need to start looking at reconciliation with the land…steps like these are steps forward."
