SYDNEY — Rumblings within the Progressive Conservatives suggest that Victoria-The Lakes MLA Keith Bain could reportedly be removed as Speaker of the Nova ...

Victoria-The Lakes MLA Keith Bain had been nominated by Premier Tim Houston to the role of Speaker of the House. Now it appears Houston and the PCs want to to remove Bain from that same role. TIM KROCHAK/THE CHRONICLE HERALDSYDNEY — Rumblings within the Progressive Conservatives suggest that Victoria-The Lakes MLA Keith Bain could reportedly be removed as Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly.

“But effective , and as many know, I have made my decision to not resign as requested and, right or wrong, will accept any consequences that might arise. “What I can confirm is that I have a job to do … I respect the democratic process, and have been chosen by the Chamber, and will continue until either the chamber or I decide otherwise. In no way am I going to choose politics ahead of the democratic process.”

“He’s being punished for being so impartial, but that is his job, that’s what he is supposed to do,” Churchill said. “He treats people fairly as a Speaker and serves the chamber very well. He’s been nothing but a gentleman, a class act and a man of integrity through and through.”“He is much more partisan,” Churchill said. “We’ve experienced him in a position as chair within different parts of the legislature. But he certainly doesn’t have the same level of impartiality that Keith has.

NDP Leader Claudia Chender:"It is highly improper for the government to be discussing removing the Speaker of the House." ERIC WYNNE/THE CHRONICLE HERALDSoon after Houston and the PCs secured a majority government in last August’s provincial election, the premier put forth Bain’s name as House Speaker.

As Cape Breton University political science professor Tom Urbaniak noted,"naturally the opposition parties used the fact that they were in the House to start raising some other issues that were top of mind for Nova Scotians," such as the cost-of-living crisis.
