Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist and Sidney Crosby assisted on Jake Guentzel’s overtime game winner Monday as the Pittsburgh Penguins skated back into a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

“In this day and age, for sure,” said former Senators coach Jacques Martin, who has had a long-time ringside seat for the Crosby-Malkin show, coaching for and against the Penguins for more than 15 years. “It speaks a lot for not only their ability as elite players for all those years, but also as people. It’s amazing what they’ve been able to accomplish and the number of years they’ve been in the playoffs. They take care of their body. It has a lot to do with their passion for the game.

Malkin, who was chosen second overall behind Alex Ovechkin in 2004, has scored 459 goals and 728 assists in 1,024 regular season games. Along the way, he has won the Art Ross twice, the Hart once and he Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. His post-season resume includes 67 goals and 113 assists in 177 games and a Conn Smythe Trophy, as well.Article content

If Josh Norris makes his long-awaited return from his shoulder injury, it will help stabilize the centre position, but, he, too, has only 130 NHL games behind him. If not, the second line centre job will again fall to Shane Pinto, who has hit a wall halfway through his rookie season. The Penguins ability to keep Crosby and Malkin both under the salary cap has been pivotal. Crosby is still playing on the 12-year, $104 million contract he signed in 2012 and his actual 2022-23 salary is $3 million. Malkin signed a four-year, $24.4 million extension last summer.
